Stomach ulcers, which are also known as gastric ulcers, are painful sores in the stomach lining. Stomach ulcers are a type of peptic ulcer disease. Peptic ulcers are any ulcers that affect both the stomach and small intestines.
The stomach produces a strong acid to help digest food and protect against microbes. To protect the tissues of the body from this acid, it also secretes a thick layer of mucus. If the mucus layer is worn away and stops functioning effectively, the acid can damage the stomach tissue, causing an ulcer.
What is Peptic Ulcer Disease?
Peptic ulcer disease occurs when open sores, or ulcers, form in the stomach or first part of the small intestine. Many cases of peptic ulcer disease develop because a bacterial infection eats away the protective lining of the digestive system. People who frequently take pain relievers are more likely to develop ulcers also.
One in 10 people develops an ulcer. Risk factors that make ulcers more likely include:
-
H. pylori bacteria
-
Frequent use of pain relieving drugs.
-
A family history of ulcers.
-
Illness of liver & kidney.
-
Regularly drinking alcohol.
-
Smoking.
-
Much spicy, heavy and junk foods
-
Indigestion
What is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)?
H. pylori is a type of bacteria. These germs can enter your body and live in your digestive tract. After many years, they can cause sores, called ulcers, in the lining of your stomach or the upper part of your small intestine. For some people, an infection can lead to stomach cancer.
Infection with H.pylori is common. About two-thirds of the world’s population has it in their bodies. For most people, it doesn’t cause ulcers or any other symptoms
As more of the world gets access to clean water and sanitation, fewer people than before are getting the bacteria. With good health habits, you can protect yourself and your children from H. pylori.

Symptoms of stomach ulcers:
The most common symptom is a burning sensation or pain in the middle of your abdomen between your chest and belly button. Typically, the pain will be more intense when your stomach is empty, and it can last for a few minutes to several hours.
Some other common signs and symptoms of ulcers include:
-
Dull pain in the stomach
-
Weight loss
-
Not wanting to eat because of pain
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Bloating
-
Feeling easily full
-
Burping or acid reflux
-
Heartburn (which is a burning sensation in the chest)
-
Pain that may improve when you eat, drink, or take antacids
-
Anemia, whose symptoms can include tiredness, shortness of breath, or paler skin
-
Dark, tarry stools
-
Vomit that’s bloody or looks like coffee grounds
What is GERD?
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a digestive disorder. It's caused when gastric acid from your stomach flows back up into your food pipe (esophagus).
Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD.
What causes GERD?
GERD happens when gastric acid from your stomach backs up into your food pipe (esophagus). A muscle at the bottom of the esophagus opens to let food from the bottom of the esophagus into the stomach. And it closes to keep food in the stomach. This muscle is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When your LES relaxes too often or for too long, acid backs up into your esophagus. This causes heartburn and may cause damage.
Some lifestyle issues that can cause GERD may include:
-
Being overweight
-
Overeating
-
Eating foods such as citrus, chocolate, and fatty or spicy foods
-
Having caffeine
-
Having alcohol
-
Smoking
Some health problems that may cause heartburn, or make it more likely, may include:
-
Swelling of your stomach lining (gastritis)
-
Painful sores (ulcers) on the lining of your stomach or esophagus, or the first part of your small intestine (duodenum)
-
An allergic condition in the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis)
What are the symptoms of GERD?
Heartburn, also called acid indigestion, or acid reflux, is the most common symptom of GERD. Heartburn is a burning chest pain that starts behind your breastbone and moves up to your neck and throat. It can last as long as 2 hours. It often feels worse after you eat. Lying down or bending over can also cause heartburn. Another common symptom of GERD is bringing swallowed food up again to the mouth (regurgitation). Some people can have trouble swallowing.
Heartburn is not a GERD symptom for most children younger than 12 years old, and for some adults. They may have a dry cough, asthma symptoms, or trouble swallowing instead.
Each person’s symptoms may vary. GERD symptoms can be caused by other health problems. Always see your healthcare provider to be sure.
What is GI Bleeding?
Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding refers to any bleeding that starts in the gastrointestinal tract. Bleeding may come from any site along the GI tract, but is often divided into:
-
Upper GI bleeding: The upper GI tract includes the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach), stomach, and first part of the small intestine.
-
Lower GI bleeding: The lower GI tract includes much of the small intestine, large intestine or bowels, rectum, and anus.
